Challenge and Change at USM & Beyond

The challenges facing USM have been headline news for a few years now. But the climate there is shifting, challenges are being addressed, opportunities are being seized, and changes are taking place. There is, however, one challenge for USM that extends to all U.S. universities:  increasing the number of Americans with a bachelor’s degree. That percentage currently falls way short of our key world competitors, and more importantly, the percentage required to fuel our economy.

Presenter:

Dr. Glenn Cummings presently serves as the 13th president of the University of Southern Maine (USM), a public university with close to 9,000 students on three campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn.

Prior to his current position Dr. Cummings career taught history and economics at  the high school level, at Southern Maine Community College and at the University of Southern Maine; served as Chair of the Education Committee in the Maine State House of Representatives and as Speaker of the House; worked as Deputy Assistant Secretary within the U.S. Department of Education, functioned as President of the Good Will-Hinckley organization and held the role of Interim President of the University of Maine at Augusta

His education includes a Doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania, a Masters of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Brown University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Roundtable Details

Takes place from 9:45-10:30 following the regular meeting and is optional

Twitter – Is It Worth It?

60% of users purchased something from a Small to Medium-sized Business after seeing it on Twitter.  Twitter was up to 304 million users in second quarter 2015. Should you be on Twitter? Let’s discuss.

Most people find Twitter either fascinating or they don’t understand it at all.  It is different from other social media platforms.  Because Twitter is often misunderstood, we’ll talk about what it is and the basics of using it.  (What the heck is a hashtag anyway?) We’ll discuss its worth to your business and how to take advantage of the platform.

Already using it? Come to the roundtable and share your experiences with the group.
